Getting Started
What do I receive after purchase?
You’ll receive a download link to the full set of STL files along with supporting files (such as build info and parts lists where included). These are digital files — nothing is physically shipped.
Where do I download my files?
After purchase, you’ll get an email with a download link. If you can’t find it, check your spam/junk folder. You can also return to the download page using the link provided after checkout.
I didn’t receive my files — what should I do?
Check your spam folder first. If it’s not there, contact me with the email you used at checkout and I’ll resend the download link. Sometimes your Paypal email can be different to your contact email. So check that too.
What software do I need to open STL files?
You’ll need a slicer for 3D printing. Common options are Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio. These let you open the STL files and prepare them for printing.
Printing & Building
How hard is it to build one of these boats?
If you’ve done some basic 3D printing and simple assembly, you’ll be fine. These are designed to be achievable, but they’re still a hands-on project. The simplest build is the Ranger because it's designed specifically for classroom use.
How long does it take to build?
Printing usually takes the longest (often a couple of days depending on your setup). Assembly can take a few hours to a couple of sessions depending on how detailed you go.
What printer settings should I use?
General PLA settings work well. Each design may have recommendations, but if you’re already printing successfully, you’re on the right track.
What if parts don’t fit properly?
This is usually due to printer tolerances or settings. Light sanding or small adjustments will sort it. These designs are made to be practical, not ultra-tight tolerance parts. Saying that I get great feedback about the fit of parts and how easy they went together.
Can I print this on my printer?
Most designs are split into sections to fit standard hobby printers (around 220mm build volume). Check each product description for specifics around build plate size.
Choosing a Model
Which boat should I start with?
If you’re new, go for a simpler or smaller model. If you’ve already built a few things or want more performance, the larger 1 meter design is a great step up. The smaller boats are all really easy to print and build. The simplest boat to print and build is the Ranger.
What’s the difference between the models?
Main differences are size, complexity, and performance. Smaller boats are quicker to print and easier to handle. Larger boats tend to sail better and feel more stable.
If you can't decide just print them all!
Are these racing boats?
They’re designed for fun sailing rather than strict racing classes. Some perform very well, but the focus is on building and enjoying the boat.
The RG65 is class legal and will be a great starting point for club racing.
Materials & Parts
What else do I need besides the printed parts?
You’ll need standard RC components (transmitter, receiver, servos, battery), plus some basic hardware like line, glue, and a few fittings. Each boat has a detailed materials page with region specific links and pre populated carts for USA and UK online shops.
Where do I buy the parts?
All parts are available from hobby shops or online (Amazon, RC stores, etc). The components used are standard and easy to source globally. We also recommend and source cheap parts so the build cost stays sane!
Do I need any special materials?
No — just typical hobby materials like PLA for printing, CA glue, and basic RC gear. Other common materials are carbon tubes and rods. For the keel bulb we use lead shot which does need melting providing a really safe way to make the keel that is the exact weight required.
Orders & Purchases
Can I download the files again later?
Yes — keep your download email safe. If you lose access, just get in touch and I can resend the link. No worries! It happens quite often.
Do you offer refunds?
Because these are digital files, refunds aren’t offered once the files have been downloaded. You simply can't give them back. If you have an issue, just reach out and I’ll help.
Can I sell boats made from these files?
The files are for personal use unless stated otherwise. If you’re interested in selling printed boats, get in touch. I'm always open to ideas.
