3D Printed Racing Sparrow 1000 - RC Sailboat

We've been busy over the summer break designing a 1000mm 3D-printable Racing Sparrow.

The CAD work is complete, and test printing is now underway.

As with the 760 version, the same principles guide this project: creating a stylish, affordable, and easy-to-print boat for home hobbyists.

If you haven’t already, check out the 760mm version, where STLs are available. We’re aiming to have this one-meter version ready by March this year(2025)—fingers crossed!

The 760mm version has been a huge success and is very popular, so we’re excited to extend the range with this one-meter model. The prototype is currently under construction and closely follows the design of the Racing Sparrow 760.

Key features of the 1000mm version include:

  • Keel Bulb: Weighing 2kg, it’s a two-piece printed design filled with 2mm lead shot and backfilled with epoxy resin thinned with methylated spirits.
  • Mast: 1250mm tall, made from 10mm carbon.
  • Keel: A two-piece part with a slot down the center for several carbon square rods, which slot into the bulb.
This clean, proven design builds on the success of the 760mm version, scaled up for even more sailing performance.

The RC electrics setup follows our philosophy of keeping costs low without sacrificing quality. The boat uses two standard servos—one for the sail arm and one for rudder control. A one-meter RC yacht doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars to build. With some practical design decisions, this project remains affordable and accessible.

It’s worth noting that this is not an IOM-class boat. Instead, it’s designed for relaxed, casual builders and sailors looking for a unique and enjoyable project.
